Nick Huso is a 2015 graduate with a Bachelor’s of Science in Health Management and is currently employed at Mayo Clinic.

Nick had enlisted in the Navy right out of high school and continued on Active Duty for 6 years. Upon finishing Active Duty, he worked hard at getting his Associate’s degree from x-ray tech school. He didn’t stop there though. “Upon completing x-ray school, I knew right away that I wanted to finish my 4-year,” Nick remarked, “I wanted that sense of accomplishment after graduating.” The University of Minnesota Crookston was the only online program that was available to take the degree program he had wished for. But, according to Nick, “life isn’t always a straight road.” When he first enrolled at the University of Minnesota Crookston, he had enrolled full time. As soon as he started, he was offered a full time job, became a new Dad, and was still in the United States Navy Reserves. Nick recalled that his first semester was tough, but that he made it through without any problems. The following semester was a different story, as he was recalled to Active Duty and spent 7 months in Afghanistan so he had to put school on hold. He returned from Afghanistan, had another son, and switched jobs twice before his return to UMC to finish his degree. But, that never killed his drive. As Nick stated, “if I had to do it all over again, I would!” Nick found that his academic advisor was very helpful, “She really went out of her way in ensuring I was in the appropriate program and she said we can make this happen.” Nick’s classes allowed him to think outside of the box. He wanted to get a management-type position and the Health Management degree program helped prepare him for the leadership roles that he is hoping to have. Nick’s first time on the UMC campus was the day of commencement, which he highly suggests attending: “I immediately felt I was at home. I felt that I was a part of the UMC family, which made it even more special.” Nick is proud to be a University of Minnesota Crookston Alumni and was grateful for the opportunity to get a U of M degree.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

 Ashley Rosier is a 2015 graduate with a degree in the Bachelor of Applied Health (BAH). After growing up in Minnesota, the U of M was the first place Ashley looked when she decided to further her education. “Getting a degree from the U is like a rite of passage, choosing the BAH degree online was a no brainer!” The flexibility of the online degree is what Ashley said drew her to the University of Minnesota Crookston. Ashley enlightened her experience by sharing, “I could take courses when it worked for me, compete the degree as it worked for me, and hold a full time job while working towards my educational goals.” While trying to balance school and working a full time job at Mayo Clinic as a radiographer created some challenges, keeping sight of her goal of obtaining her bachelor’s degree to continue on her radiography career path kept her motivated. “I made a promise to myself that I would complete my Bachelor's degree.  Deciding to go back to school was the first step in fulfilling that promise,“ Ashley explained. Half way through obtaining her degree from UMC, Ashley received a promotion to a Lead Technologist. It was an exciting time but now she needed to add the addition of learning a new job while going to school. It ended up working out as Ashley stated “It turns out that my coursework at UMC supported and accommodated my transition to my new world; I was able to take lessons and content I was learning in class and directly apply it to my job,” Ashley continued “My course work even allowed me to participate in projects and committees because of the skills I was learning.” Ashley’s experience at the University of Minnesota shows the relevancy of the education provided to real world work experiences. Being a UMC alumni may seem “surreal” to Ashley, but the staff and faculty are honored to a have an alumni with her type of capabilities and stature. Ashley is prime example of prestigious graduates we have here at UMC.

Tia Leaf

Tia Leaf is a 2014 graduate with a degree in Business Management and a minor in Marketing. Tia chose UMC online because of the cost, reputation, and degree options. Throughout her time here she had good interactions with the Faculty and Staff. Her favorite class was human resources management as it was interesting to her and a potential career avenue.  As an alum Tia said that if she could tell prospective students one thing it would be “how convenient it is if you are not able to physically go to campus.” After receiving her degree Tia was promoted and currently works as a Senior Service Representative. Getting her degree did not come without hardship though as she had to overcome limitations due to a chronic illness. In the end she graduated with a 3.5 GPA and found a career that supported and encouraged her to succeed. The University of Minnesota Crookston is extremely proud to have Tia as an alumni. Her story is one that we love to share as her accomplishments show off the type of astounding students we have here.
